So I was thinking about hockey stats today, right? Decided to dig into Michael Holland’s numbers. Wanted a full picture of his goals and assists, like how they actually broke down game by game. Didn’t find one solid place telling the whole story though. Typical, you know?
Started the Hunt
Opened up a fresh spreadsheet. Blank page staring at me. Headings first, obviously:
Player, Date, Opponent, Goals, Assists. Simple stuff. Figured I’d track the type too.
- Was it an even-strength goal? Those grinders.
- A slick power play assist?
- Maybe a short-handed snipe? Gotta know!
The Real Grind Began
Clicked over to the official league stats site. Searched “Michael Holland”. Boom, career totals: 50 goals, 75 assists. Nice numbers! But… totals don’t show the journey. Like, when did he actually get those points?
Navigated to the “Game Logs” section. Found the dropdown, picked Holland’s name. This took patience! Clicked through each season, one by painful one. Scrolled down endless tables. Copied the Date, Opponent, and those sweet, sweet numbers under G and AA.
Sorting the Mess
Past it all into my spreadsheet. Looked like alphabet soup! Had to sort it. Selected the whole date column. Clicked “Sort Ascending” – oldest to newest.
Added a helper column for “Situation”. Went row by row, manually filling that out:
- Peeked back at the game log details on the website.
- Saw a “PP” icon? Tapped out “Power Play” in my sheet.
- “SH”? Wrote “Short Handed”.
- No special icon? Just plain old “Even Strength”.
Felt like it took forever!
Seeing the Patterns
Finally hit the bottom. All data in! Started playing around. Clicked that tiny filter button in the spreadsheet.
- Filtered just Goals. Wanted to see where he lit the lamp most.
- Then filtered just Assists. Who was he feeding regularly?
- Clicked the “Situation” filter too. Watched the rows vanish.
Surprises popped up! Dude loved scoring on that one specific team. Like, half his goals seemed to come against them! His assists were mostly even strength, setting things up quietly.
What Stood Out
Put it all together. Yeah, Holland wasn’t always flashy. Most seasons he hit 15-20 goals solidly. But those assists? They jumped! Couple seasons near 30 helpers. Power play goals came in clusters – seemed to get hot for a month then cool off. The final spreadsheet sheet tells the real story, way better than the basic stats page.
