I thought, easy does it. I’ll start slow. But finding a decent court? That was a whole other battle. Some were booked solid for months, others looked like they hadn’t seen a net repair since the dinosaurs roamed.
And my body, oh boy. The first few times I tried to hit a ball, I felt like I’d wrestled a bear. Everything ached. My coordination was, let’s be generous, rusty. It was rough. Here’s a little list of my initial struggles:

- Getting my creaky joints to cooperate.
- Remembering how to even hold the racket right, felt like.
- Not getting completely winded after five minutes.
But the real kicker, the thing that nearly made me hang up the racket for good again, wasn’t the physical part. It was trying to join this local “comeback” tennis program. Sounded perfect on paper, right? “Ease back into tennis with us!” they said. Ha!
The people running it were something else. All smiles and promises when you signed up, of course. But then, a maze of rules, schedules that changed every week, and absolutely zero actual guidance for someone like me who was genuinely trying to, you know, return to play. It reminded me so much of this one manager I had years ago. All about procedures, no clue about people.
They had this fancy online system for booking and “progress tracking.” Supposedly. Thing was, it was so clunky and confusing, you’d think they designed it to keep people out. And the fees! Oh, don’t even get me started on the “admin fees” and the “court maintenance contributions” that popped up out of nowhere. I just wanted to hit some balls, not fund their entire operation.
I tried to ask a few simple questions once. Just basic stuff. The fella in charge, this self-important “coordinator,” he just looked down his nose at me. Puffed himself up and said, “It’s all clearly outlined in the welcome packet, sir.” Yeah, a 30-page digital document that was probably written by a lawyer. I felt like I was dealing with the tax office, not a tennis club.
Why I know this whole process can be a pain
This whole experience, honestly, it soured me for a bit. I was about ready to give up. Here I was, motivated, trying to do something good for myself, and this “support system” was just a massive headache. It’s like they forgot the whole point was to make tennis accessible and fun again for folks like me.
It’s funny, isn’t it? Sometimes the stuff that’s supposed to help you ends up being the biggest pain in the neck. I guess it’s like that with a lot of things in life. You try to follow the “official” path and just get bogged down in nonsense.
So, I ditched that whole “program.” Said goodbye to their confusing emails and their surprise fees. Decided to go it alone. Took a while, but I eventually found this little public court, tucked away. Nobody bothers you there. It’s not fancy, but the net’s mostly straight.
I started real slow. Just hitting the ball against a wall some days. Then rallying with a couple of other old-timers I met there. No pressure, no “coordinators,” no handbooks. Just tennis, the way it should be. I’m still not playing like I used to, not by a long shot. Still a bit creaky. But it’s on my own terms. And that, my friends, is the best kind of “rtp” there is, if you ask me. You just gotta find your own way sometimes, even if the “easy” route looks tempting at first.
