Got this idea after watching a practice session last Tuesday – figured folks might wanna know who really makes our Plymouth South Hockey tick. Just grabbed my old notepad and the crappy team roster sheet Coach gave me months ago. Honestly, didn’t even check if the players were still all the same.
Starting Point Was a Disaster
First, tried snapping pics during morning drills. Big mistake. Lighting in that rink is awful, and my phone camera sucks. Ended up with a bunch of blurry ghosts skating around. Deleted those fast. Shoulda just used the official team photos from last year’s site, even if the haircuts are outdated.
Actually Talking to Players
Cornered a few guys after practice. Thought it’d be easy. Asked Mikey Davidson – our top scorer – “What makes you so good?” He just shrugged and mumbled something about luck. Got more from Lucas Riley, the goalie. Kid wouldn’t shut up about his pre-game playlist being the secret. Apparently, heavy metal equals more saves. Who knew?
Notes looked like chicken scratch:
- Jake Morrison (Defense): Plays like a brick wall. Literally told me his strategy is “get in the way.”
- Aiden Carter (Forward): Speed demon. Says he skates faster when mad. Got benched last week for yelling at ref.
- Sam Ellis (Captain): Talks more than plays. Makes speeches between periods. Calls them “inspirational chats.” Team rolls eyes.
Where Things Went South
Tried getting fancy stats from the assistant coach. Big numbers about face-off wins and shot percentages. Filled half a page. Looked at it later and realized nobody cares. This ain’t pro hockey. Deleted all the stats. People just wanna know who’s fun to watch and why.
Threw It Together Late Night
Sat at my kitchen table at like 11 PM, coffee gone cold. Just typed what I remembered. Stuck with the photos where you can kinda see their faces. Wrote short blurbs:
- Mikey: Scores when you least expect it. Quiet kid.
- Lucas: Headbanging saves the day.
- Jake: Human speed bump.
- Aiden: Fast, furious, kinda grumpy.
- Sam: Captain Speech-Master. Motto: “Just skate more!”
Posted it. Realized I misspelled “Plymouth” in the title. Too tired to care. Hit publish anyway. Turns out people liked the messy, real stuff more than perfect stats. Learned more about the players than hockey, honestly.
