Honestly, this whole thing started because my kid offhandedly asked me Friday night if her friend Mia’s weekend hockey game was nearby. She wanted to go watch and support. And like, I figured it would be easy to find, right? Just grab my phone, quick search, boom. But nah.
So Here’s What Went Down
I grabbed my laptop at like 9 PM after settling the kids down. Opened up the browser and just typed “Miaa High School Hockey Schedule” straight into Google. Hit enter feeling pretty confident. The results? Total junk. Mostly hockey equipment ads, some high schools on the other side of the country named “Mia” something, and zero about actual games or dates. Ugh.
Frustrating. Tried again but added “weekend games near me.” Still garbage. My search history looked like a mess already:
- “Miaa hockey home games”
- “Miaa high school ice rink location”
- “Miaa Hawks schedule” (guessed the mascot, heh)
Nothing stuck. Every click led to some generic school calendar page with no mention of sports. Was seriously doubting if I got the school name right. Maybe it’s “Mia” not “Miaa”? Tried that. Worse! Pulled up dental schools. What?!
Decided to brute force it. Went to the homepage of what I thought was the correct county school board site. Bad move. That site was a maze. Found the athletics section after clicking like twenty times. Tiny text, no hockey category. Scrolled through pages of football and soccer schedules. Zero hockey info. My head was spinning.
By 10 PM, I was ready to scream. Almost gave up. Then had a brainwave: maybe the damn name is abbreviated differently or I spelled it wrong. Maybe it’s two words? Started trying random variations – “M.I.A.A. hockey,” “Miaa district,” even “local high school hockey.” Last one just brought up news articles about state championships from last year. Pointless.
I had that sinking feeling this was gonna blow up my Saturday. Seriously considered driving to the high school just to peek at a paper notice board. Then… remember Brenda? That mom from last year’s science fair exchange? Figured, screw it, shot her a quick text past 10:30 PM. “Hey Brenda, super random, but do you know how to find Miaa hockey game times for this weekend? Websites are killing me.”
Two minutes later? Ding. Felt like victory.
She texts back: “Girl! They post the weekend slots every Wednesday evening on the booster club’s Facebook page under ‘Events’. The search is brutal, you aren’t crazy lol.”
Facebook. Of course. Why didn’t I think of that? Logged in, searched for the booster club page – took three tries to get the exact name right – scrolled down, and bam. Found the post. Game times, opponents, rink location, everything. Saturday at 4 PM. Literally ten minutes from my house. The website schedule? Ha! Apparently updated only “semesterly” according to the Facebook post. No wonder my googling failed.
So yeah. Lesson painfully learned. School websites for hockey schedules? Forget it. Just ask Brenda or go straight to the parents group next time. Saved the whole damn Saturday morning, though. Kid was thrilled. I felt like a detective who cracked the worst case ever.
